Red Beach, the miracle of nature

The top spot in Santorini for swimming is the Red Beach. Take your dives next to the vertical reddish rocks that next to the Aegean waters create an unreal landscape. Arrive from the archaeological site of Akrotiri with just a 5-minute walk.

Santorini has good beaches such as the sandy beach of Kamari on the eastern side of the island, the famous Perissa with its fine black sand, the busy beach of Monolithos near the airport, Kolumpos, Vlyhada and many more… However, the Red beach is considered the best

This special beach got its name from the vertical reddish rocks that stand all around next to the deep pelagic waters composing a landscape, almost unreal. It is approached from the great archaeological site of Akrotiri where in the parking lot you will leave your vehicle and continue on a downhill path for 5 minutes to the sea.

Of course you can also come by excursion boat from Akrotiri. Be prepared for a lot of people, especially in August. There are canteens, while part of the beach has been taken over by sun loungers. It has a southern orientation and therefore does not catch the meltemi. When you choose Santorini, know that swimming at the Red Beach is one of the “must dos” of the island.

Not only from Greece, but also from abroad it is intended as the island for the honeymoon. One of the most romantic places you will find in Santorini is the sunset in Oia, especially from the top of the ruins at Kastelli, the tip of the island where the sun reigns over the Caldera in the most spectacular way.

Also, Imerovigli occupies the most privileged position and has the most shocking view of the caldera and Thirasia. It is famous for the most luxurious hotels that offer their guests a “natural balcony” on the caldera, calm atmosphere and super relaxing scenery.

Excursion to the Volcano and the surrounding settlements

Prefer packages that include a visit to the Volcano, the Hot Springs and spend some time in Thirasia to discover the settlements of Potamo and Manola, which are not developed for tourism, and swim in Korfos (old port), where you can also enjoy a meal in his taverns. However, the experience of seeing Santorini by boat is something you should not miss for any reason.

Visit Emporio and the nearby beaches

The village of Emporio is located in the southern part of Santorini and in the past was the commercial center of the island, as most of the shops were located here until a few years ago.

Its medieval castle (Goulas) is well preserved. You will navigate the labyrinthine medieval cobblestones where in some cases only one person can fit. You will see the church of Evangelistria or Panagia Messiani (16th century) and the restored medieval buildings.

See rare finds in the island’s museums

A visit to the museum of Prehistoric Thira as well as the archaeological museum is like a dive into the long history of the island. The first houses finds from the excavations at Akrotiri, such as furniture casts, bronze vessels and the unique golden figurine of a goat.

The archaeological museum again hosts collections of sculptures and inscriptions from the Archaic to the Roman period. Excavations revealed parts of an advanced settlement of the 3rd millennium BC buried in the ash of the great volcanic eruption (15th century BC). It is considered one of the most important prehistoric centers of the Aegean and the Mediterranean.

See Pyrgos, the old capital

South of Fira you will find the village of Pyrgos which used to be (until 1800) the island’s capital. The settlement is located at the foot of Prof. Ilias which is the highest mountain of Santorini.

In the center of the village dominates the medieval castle which is preserved in good condition. There are quaint taverns and beautiful cafes. Visit the monastery of Prophet Ilias or follow the path to the top of the mountain.

Columbus: The most hidden beach with rocks from layers of lava

Live an unrepeatable experience in Columbus. Arrive at Cape Columbus in Santorini. Follow the path to Oia and reach a special beach with black sand, and lava rocks casting their shadow. Enjoy your dives in the crystal clear waters which are always kept warm by the active underwater volcano of Columbus located right below.

Dive with pride in Kamari

Arrived at Kamari and lay down on black sand and small pumice stones that cover this incredible beach. It is one of the most organized beaches on the island and in its facilities you will find everything you need. Combine diving with a walk in Ancient Thira and enjoy a not so famous archaeological site but definitely unique with an incredible view towards the Aegean.
